The Moon square Uranus
the Moon square Uranus, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart the Moon square Uranus is read as a native who is, in the tradition's own phrase, a study in contradiction: instinct wants a settled, predictable comfort while Uranus insists on change for its own sake, and the two rarely settle their disagreement for long. The square is read as friction rather than fusion, moods that can swing without much warning and a self-image that keeps surprising the person living inside it as much as it surprises everyone else. Between two charts, this square is read among the pairing's harder contacts: an initial attraction that is exciting precisely for being unconventional gives way to a genuinely unsettled feeling, periods of closeness alternating with periods of distance, the Moon person feeling neglected exactly when the Uranus person seems to have withdrawn. Sources note the friction shows up plainly as disagreement over domestic routines and arrangements, an emotional rollercoaster the square makes harder to smooth out than the trine or sextile would.
The story
A square is ninety degrees, a quarter of the circle, one of the four configurations Ptolemy names; Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect calls the square a hard aspect that creates a strong and usable tension requiring adjustment or a decision, and Ptolemy calls it, together with the opposition, discordant. Uranus carries into this pairing the oldest sky god the Greeks named, Ouranos: born of Gaia and then her mate, he fathered the Titans, the Cyclopes and the Hundred Handed Ones, then hid each of them away inside their own mother out of dislike for what he had made, until Cronus, the one child willing to act, castrated him at Gaia's own urging and ended his reign outright; Uranus himself barely appears in the myths that follow. Set at this harder angle, Selene's own need for a settled rhythm meets a myth about a father overthrown without warning, and the friction is read as contradiction rather than simple disruption, comfort and sudden change unable to agree on which of them gets to define the moment.
