The Moon square Neptune

the Moon square Neptune, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Within a single chart the Moon square Neptune is read as feeling pulled toward an ideal it cannot quite reach: the dreamy nature and the big hopes the tradition names in this contact make it, sources warn, too easy to become disenchanted, since instinct wants comfort and clarity while Neptune keeps blurring the picture with a wish or an idealisation that will not resolve into a plain request. Where the sextile or trine lets feeling and imagination cooperate, the square adds friction instead, a person who can feel let down by ordinary life without always being able to say what the disappointment was measured against. Between two charts, this square is read as a tendency to misunderstand or misread each other's signals, needing real patience to process the hurt feelings that follow; sources warn specifically against addictive behaviors settling into a bond this porous, and recommend truthfulness and open emotional expression as the corrective, since the contact rewards plain communication far more than it rewards simply trusting the feeling of closeness to correct itself.

The story

A square is ninety degrees, a quarter of the circle, one of the four configurations Ptolemy names; Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect calls the square a hard aspect that creates a strong and usable tension requiring adjustment or a decision, and Ptolemy calls it, together with the opposition, discordant. The pairing carries its own built in logic without needing any shared myth: the Moon's own gravity is, astronomically, the main driver of Earth's tides, pulling the sea into the rhythm of its phases, while Neptune's own mythology keeps him a plain water god, one of three brothers, with Jupiter and Pluto, who divided the world between sky, sea and underworld, a god likely tied first to freshwater springs and only later to the sea itself. Set at this harder angle, the tide runs against the shore rather than with it: a mood still answers to the Moon's own pull, but the square asks it to move against the very current Neptune's water would otherwise carry it toward, the old sailors' fear of a sea that will not behave as the sky above it promised.
