The Moon square Mars
the Moon square Mars, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart the Moon square Mars is read as passion and precocity carried in a tough exterior that hides real vulnerability underneath: the tradition describes natives who grow restless under routine, anger easily, and feel a persistent urgency to make an impact on people around them, sometimes coming across as self-absorbed as a result. Their responses arrive quickly but their energy runs in bursts, which the delineators say can waste considerable courage and passion, since patience is exactly the quality this placement finds hardest to hold onto. Between two charts, one person's Moon square another's Mars is read among this pairing's harder register, though sources note conflict shows up here somewhat less than it does with the opposition: the emotional rollercoaster is still trying, particularly for the Moon person, the Mars partner reading as aggressive and pushy while the Moon partner reads as overly demanding, with defensiveness, nagging and a real risk of co-dependency building resentment over shared living arrangements.
The story
A square sets two bodies ninety degrees apart, a quarter of the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs names it, together with the opposition, discordant, since the signs it joins are, in his words, of different natures and sexes, a judgment about the angle regardless of which bodies stand in it. No surviving myth ties Selene directly to Ares; her own story turns on her nightly crossing of the sky and her long love for the sleeping Endymion. Mars, in Roman religion, held both a martial and an agricultural office, protector of the harvest as much as of the battlefield. Squared rather than eased together, the Moon's instinctive light and Mars's forceful drive press against each other here without a shared myth to soften the friction, feeling and force each demanding the lead at once.
