The Moon square Jupiter
the Moon square Jupiter, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart the Moon square Jupiter is read as a charitable heart that goes further than it should: the tradition describes natives whose big-heartedness leads them into promises they cannot always keep, alongside a real emotional restlessness sometimes traced to an overindulgent or overprotective maternal figure in childhood. These people tend to overstate their own emotions, swinging between unrealistic enthusiasm and real disappointment once events fail to match it, the underlying generosity never really in doubt even where the judgment attached to it is. Between two charts, one person's Moon square another's Jupiter is read among this pairing's harder, square and opposition register: sources describe generosity taken to an extreme, poor judgment born of excessive optimism that can bring real trouble or leave one partner open to being taken advantage of. The couple's shared lesson is to work out boundaries together and to resist the pull toward excessive expression, developing better judgment through experience rather than through hasty decisions made without the full picture.
The story
A square sets two bodies ninety degrees apart, a quarter of the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs names it, together with the opposition, discordant, since the signs it joins are, in his words, of different natures and sexes, a judgment about the angle regardless of which bodies stand in it. The Homeric Hymn to Selene credits the Moon goddess with bearing Zeus a daughter, Pandia, all brightness, tying her, in myth, to Jupiter's Greek counterpart through offspring rather than mere proximity. Squared rather than easily joined, that same family bond is read here as generosity without its usual restraint, increase offered faster than the Moon's own instinct can actually absorb it.
