The Moon sextile Mercury
the Moon sextile Mercury, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart the Moon sextile Mercury is read as feeling and thought meeting on cooperative rather than fused terms: it comes easily and naturally for these natives to converse and express themselves, balancing emotional and logical considerations in problem-solving well enough to avoid both insensitivity and excessive rationality. The tradition names a pull toward written expression, poetry and imaginative storytelling, and most people with this contact become excellent listeners even while genuinely enjoying conversation themselves, drawing on the balance when it is needed rather than living inside it automatically. Between two charts, one person's Moon sextile another's Mercury is read as long, friendly conversation that flows without much effort: sources describe each person feeling deeply understood by the other, an aspect that offers a real opportunity to work through problems rationally and reasonably, both people genuinely interested in sharing personal information and memories with one another.
The story
A sextile is sixty degrees, a sixth of the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs names it, together with the trine, harmonious, since the two signs it joins are of the same kind, all masculine or all feminine, a judgment about the angle itself. Hermes is remembered, in the Homeric Hymn that bears his name, as a trickster from infancy, credited with inventing the lyre and with stealing Apollo's sacred cattle before his first day had ended; his Roman counterpart Mercury shares that same credit for the lyre and, separately, carries the caduceus, the herald's staff of two entwined snakes that was Apollo's own gift to him. Selene, by contrast, is defined by patience, her nightly crossing of the sky and her long, quiet love for the sleeping Endymion. Offered only a cooperative angle rather than a fusion, the Moon's steady feeling and Mercury's quick tongue meet here as two separate voices on genuinely good terms, each still needing the other's willingness rather than simply taking it for granted.
