The Moon sextile Jupiter
the Moon sextile Jupiter, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart the Moon sextile Jupiter is read as emotional balance paired with a realistic optimism: the tradition describes natives as pleasantly composed, thanks to an inner sense of harmony, with unusually good perspective on their own and other people's emotional matters. They are warm, humorous and tolerant, tend to attract positive circumstances, and are credited with hunches that are typically accurate; the astrologers add that this balance comes with a belief in the basic goodness of people alongside a healthy appetite for ordinary fun, rather than either naive trust or joyless caution. Between two charts, one person's Moon sextile another's Jupiter is read among the easier, sextile and trine register of this pairing: sources describe natural joy, generosity and good fortune between the two people, feelings expressed freely and gratitude shown openly, an infectious energy and a supportive, can-do attitude that lets abundance manifest without much effort, the one skill still worth learning being how to say no before commitments pile up too far.
The story
A sextile is sixty degrees, a sixth of the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs names it, together with the trine, harmonious, since the two signs it joins are of the same kind, all masculine or all feminine, a judgment about the angle itself. The Homeric Hymn to Selene credits the Moon goddess with bearing Zeus a daughter, Pandia, all brightness, and the poet Alcman names a second daughter, Ersa, dew, from the same pairing. Selene's own myth, in other words, already ties her to Jupiter's Greek counterpart through offspring. Offered here only a cooperative angle rather than a fusion, that same generosity reaches the Moon lightly, increase lent rather than poured in all at once.
