The Moon opposite Uranus
the Moon opposite Uranus, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart the Moon opposite Uranus is read the same way as the square: a study in contradiction, instinct's wish for settled comfort facing Uranus's insistence on change directly rather than at a right angle. The opposition is read as placing the two needs at genuinely different ends of the same life, moods swinging between them without much warning, each pole fully in charge only while the other one, for now, recedes. Between two charts, this opposition belongs among the pairing's harder contacts, the same unsettled feeling the tradition names for every hard Moon-Uranus pairing: excitement at the start, then vacillation between closeness and distance, the Moon person reaching for connection just as the Uranus person seems to step back. Sources note the same tendency toward disagreement over domestic arrangements and an emotional rollercoaster, the opposition's own distance making the swing between the two states more visible than in the conjunction or square.
The story
An opposition is a hundred and eighty degrees, half the circle, the two bodies facing each other directly across it; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs groups it with the square as discordant, and Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect describes oppositions as prone to exaggeration, their dichotomous quality keeping whatever they touch in a real and often tense relation rather than letting it settle. Uranus carries into this pairing the oldest sky god the Greeks named, Ouranos: born of Gaia and then her mate, he fathered the Titans, the Cyclopes and the Hundred Handed Ones, then hid each of them away inside their own mother out of dislike for what he had made, until Cronus, the one child willing to act, castrated him at Gaia's own urging and ended his reign outright; Uranus himself barely appears in the myths that follow. Facing each other directly, the Moon's oldest wish, to return night after night to the same familiar phase, stands across from a myth about a reign that did not get to continue at all, each side of the sky holding a position the myth itself never let both hold together.
