The Moon opposite Saturn
the Moon opposite Saturn, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart the Moon opposite Saturn is read the same way as the square: the native needs to learn to trust others more, fear keeping them from fully enjoying personal relationships and sitting behind an occasional rigidity in self-expression. Facing each other directly rather than at a right angle, the opposition is read as setting the wish for comfort and the insistence that comfort be earned at two genuinely opposite poles, each able to dominate only while the other, for the time being, steps back. Between two charts, this opposition falls among the relationship's more powerful, serious contacts, the same grouping the tradition gives every hard Moon-Saturn pairing: a need to censor dependency, a sense of constraint around expressing the 'child' within, and a recurring pattern of emotional distance followed by tearful reunion. Sources still credit the bond with a real chance at longevity and its fair share of ups and downs, the opposition's own greater distance making the swings between closeness and reserve more visible than in the conjunction or square.
The story
An opposition is a hundred and eighty degrees, half the circle, the two bodies facing each other directly across it; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs groups it with the square as discordant, and Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect describes oppositions as prone to exaggeration, their dichotomous quality keeping whatever they touch in a real and often tense relation rather than letting it settle. Two different stories carry the name. In Greek myth, Cronus overthrew his own father Uranus, then devoured his own children by Rhea to escape a prophecy that one of them would depose him in turn, until his son Jupiter, Zeus in that telling, did exactly that. Rome kept the name but not the violence: its own Saturn arrived in Italy already dethroned and a fugitive, was received by Janus, brought agriculture and civilization, and was rewarded with a share of the kingdom rather than winning it back by force, ruling afterward, in Virgil's own account, over a golden age of peace. Facing each other directly, Selene's plain wish to be comforted stands across from the same fear that once made a father swallow his own children, each side holding a position the other cannot occupy at once, an old wariness and an old warmth taking turns rather than ever quite meeting in the middle.
