The Moon opposite Pluto
the Moon opposite Pluto, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart the Moon opposite Pluto is read the same way as the square: a native not always open with their feelings, a strong urge to share the innermost self pulling against a simultaneous wish to control what others actually learn, the tradition again tracing the contradiction to fear. Facing each other rather than meeting at a right angle, the opposition is read as placing the wish to reveal and the wish to guard at two genuinely opposite poles, each fully in charge only while the other, for the moment, yields. Between two charts, this opposition carries the same deep-feeling theme the tradition reads into every Moon-Pluto contact, here again turned toward power struggles and psychological demons: fear of loss can generate jealousy, control or possessiveness, and sources again recommend seeking help where the conflict resists easy resolution, the opposition's own greater distance making that outside perspective more useful rather than less.
The story
An opposition is a hundred and eighty degrees, half the circle, the two bodies facing each other directly across it; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs groups it with the square as discordant, and Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect describes oppositions as prone to exaggeration, their dichotomous quality keeping whatever they touch in a real and often tense relation rather than letting it settle. Persephone offers the clearest mythic bridge between these two: daughter of Demeter, she was gathering flowers when Hades burst through a cleft in the earth and carried her into the underworld with Zeus's consent; grieving, Demeter let the earth grow nothing until a bargain was struck, and because Persephone had eaten pomegranate seeds while below, she was bound to spend a third of each year, the winter months, in Pluto's realm and the rest above with her mother, the changing seasons read ever since as the visible trace of her passage. Facing each other directly, the Moon's need for warmth and open ground stands across from Pluto's dark, hidden realm as two seasons that can never occupy the same sky at once, each only fully itself while the other is, for now, elsewhere.
