The Moon opposite Mars

the Moon opposite Mars, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Within a single chart the Moon opposite Mars shares the square's precocious passion and its tough exterior over real vulnerability, with the tradition naming conflict as especially prominent in the lives of natives carrying this particular angle rather than the square. Restlessness under routine, quick anger, and an urgent need to make an impression on other people are all named here as well, the placement's quick, sporadic bursts of energy again read as capable of wasting real courage and passion for want of the patience to see things through. Between two charts, one person's Moon opposite another's Mars is read among this pairing's harder register, with conflict named as its most pronounced form here: the emotional rollercoaster is trying, particularly for the Moon person, the Mars partner appearing aggressive and pushy while the Moon partner appears overly demanding, defensiveness, nagging and a real risk of co-dependency building resentment over time in any arrangement the two share.

The story

An opposition sets two bodies a hundred and eighty degrees apart, the full diameter of the circle, the greatest distance either can stand from the other; Ptolemy counts it, together with the square, discordant, set against the trine and sextile's harmony. No surviving myth ties Selene directly to Ares; her own story is carried by her nightly crossing of the sky and her long love for the sleeping Endymion. Mars, in Roman religion, held both a martial office and an agricultural one, guarding the harvest as readily as waging war. Facing each other across the wheel rather than meeting at all, the Moon's instinctive light and Mars's forceful drive read here as two forces pulling a shared life in opposite directions at once.
