The Moon opposite Jupiter

the Moon opposite Jupiter, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Within a single chart the Moon opposite Jupiter shares the square's difficulty with emotional balance, expressed here as an excessive charitableness that ends up harming the very person practicing it: the tradition describes natives who want to see the best in everyone and, in the process, gain a reputation for unreliability, since inner restlessness and trouble following through can leave good intentions unfinished. Like the square, this opposition is read as people jumping between ideas without grounding any one of them fully in reality before moving to the next. Between two charts, one person's Moon opposite another's Jupiter is read among this pairing's harder, square and opposition register: sources describe generosity carried past its useful limit, poor judgment born of excessive optimism that can bring real trouble or leave one partner open to being taken advantage of. Working out boundaries together and developing better judgment through lived experience, rather than through hasty decisions taken without the full picture, is named as the couple's shared task.

The story

An opposition sets two bodies a hundred and eighty degrees apart, the full diameter of the circle, the greatest distance either can stand from the other; Ptolemy counts it, together with the square, discordant, set against the trine and sextile's harmony. The Homeric Hymn to Selene credits the Moon goddess with bearing Zeus a daughter, Pandia, all brightness, linking her, in myth, to Jupiter's Greek counterpart through offspring rather than mere proximity. Facing each other across the wheel rather than standing close, that same bond is read here as generosity pulled to its farthest possible stretch, increase offered from so great a distance that it is easy to promise and hard to actually deliver.
