The Moon conjunct Uranus
the Moon conjunct Uranus, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart the Moon conjunct Uranus is read as an independent spirit that resists being labeled or pigeon-holed: instinct fused directly with Uranus's own need for freedom produces a temperament that finds the expected emotional response, whatever it might be, slightly suspicious simply for being expected. The tradition names moods that can shift without warning, a comfort with unpredictability that other people can experience as detachment, and a private insistence on defining, unassisted, what one actually feels rather than accepting a label anyone else offers first. Between two charts, one person's Moon conjunct another's Uranus is read as an attraction that starts out exciting in a distinctly unconventional way, though sources describe a genuinely unsettled feeling that can follow it, marked periods of vacillation between emotional closeness and emotional distance. The Moon person can feel neglected reaching for closeness exactly when the Uranus person seems to have gone absent, and the pairing's synastry often shows up first as disagreement over domestic arrangements and routines, a rollercoaster read as electric rather than simply unstable.
The story
A conjunction sets two bodies at, or close to, the same degree, with no real angular distance between them; Ptolemy's own chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs measures the opposition, trine, square and sextile by the number of degrees separating two positions, yet Wikipedia's summary counts the conjunction among the five traditional major aspects sometimes called Ptolemaic, and reports that conjunctions are said to be the most powerful aspects, because they mutually intensify the effects of the involved planets. Uranus carries into this pairing the oldest sky god the Greeks named, Ouranos: born of Gaia and then her mate, he fathered the Titans, the Cyclopes and the Hundred Handed Ones, then hid each of them away inside their own mother out of dislike for what he had made, until Cronus, the one child willing to act, castrated him at Gaia's own urging and ended his reign outright; Uranus himself barely appears in the myths that follow. Fused directly with Selene's own steady, returning light, the sky god who was ended outright rather than merely limited asks the Moon's own instinct for continuity to accept a rupture it did not choose, an independence that can look, from outside, like a refusal to be held by anything at all.
