Mercury trine Uranus

Mercury trine Uranus, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Within a single chart Mercury trine Uranus is read, like the sextile, as openness to new ideas and a fair share of unique perspectives of one's own, often with a technical bent toward computers, technology or science. The tradition names the trine the more dynamic of the two harmonious Mercury-Uranus contacts, originality arriving as a steady undertone to how the person thinks rather than a resource reached for only when useful. Between two charts, one person's Mercury trine another's Uranus is read as an intellectual companionship with the least friction of any Mercury-Uranus contact, partners very perceptive and intuitive with one another, often able to finish each other's sentences, open communication a strength that needs very little active maintenance.

The story

A trine is a hundred and twenty degrees, a third of the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs calls it, together with the sextile, harmonious, since the signs it joins are of the same kind, all masculine or all feminine, and Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect calls the trine extremely beneficial, indicating harmony, ease and what is natural, one of the two aspects the tradition sets against the square and opposition's discord. Hermes is credited with inventing the lyre, built from a tortoise shell on a sudden, unasked for inspiration rather than through any careful plan; named for the primordial sky Ouranos, born of Gaia herself before their union produced the Titans, the Cyclopes and the Hundred Handed Ones, one generation of new beings after another, Uranus carries into this pairing an old and prolific kind of invention the tradition keeps. At the trine's easy angle, the herald's own cleverness and Ouranos's own gift for invention sit together without a fight, a new idea arriving the way that sky god's own long line of offspring did, one generation answering the last without a struggle between them.
