Mercury trine Jupiter
Mercury trine Jupiter, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart Mercury trine Jupiter is read, like the sextile, as a mind with big ideas and noble intentions, excellent at seeing the big picture and making accurate observations. The tradition describes the trine as the more dynamic of the two harmonious Mercury-Jupiter contacts, this same breadth of thought arriving as a steady undertone to how the person reasons rather than a wider view they have to actively seek out. Between two charts, one person's Mercury trine another's Jupiter is read as the easiest flow of communication the pairing offers: the Jupiter partner's enthusiasm for the Mercury partner's ideas comes with the least friction of any Mercury-Jupiter contact, conversation staying lively, open and positive, Jupiter's own wider perspective and Mercury's own concrete expression cooperating with very little need for correction on either side.
The story
A trine is a hundred and twenty degrees, a third of the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs calls it, together with the sextile, harmonious, since the signs it joins are of the same kind, all masculine or all feminine, and Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect calls the trine extremely beneficial, indicating harmony, ease and what is natural, one of the two aspects the tradition sets against the square and opposition's discord. Mercury's own parentage settles the connection outright: he is, in the standard genealogy, the son of Jupiter and Maia, daughter of the Titan Atlas. Mercury is himself named a god of boundaries, commerce, communication, eloquence and travel; Jupiter, the father whose household he was born into, ruled the gods as their king. Set at this most flowing angle, the son and the father need no effort to agree, Mercury's own quickness carrying Jupiter's own scale as naturally as a household that shares a single family likeness.
