Mercury square Saturn
Mercury square Saturn, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart Mercury square Saturn is read through the tradition's general rule for Saturn's hard contacts with a personal planet, a censoring effect on whatever it touches: self-censorship in communication and real difficulty expressing emotion freely, Ptolemy's own malefic judgement of Saturn read here as friction against Mercury's ordinary wish to speak without first weighing every possible consequence. Between two charts, this square is read as carrying strong elements of teaching and learning, and a deep respect for each other's intelligence, even as competitiveness can emerge: the Mercury person may feel childish or not bright enough next to the Saturn person, and sources warn that negativity or criticism can come to dominate the pair's communication if the underlying respect is not actively maintained.
The story
A square is ninety degrees, a quarter of the circle, one of the four configurations Ptolemy names; Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect calls the square a hard aspect that creates a strong and usable tension requiring adjustment or a decision, and Ptolemy calls it, together with the opposition, discordant. Mercury's own father, Jupiter, succeeded his father, Saturn, as king of the gods, a succession the Romans kept free of violence, Saturn rewarded afterward with his own temple and a continuing cult rather than exile; Mercury, born into the household that replaced Saturn's own reign, carries a share of that history simply by being Jupiter's son, without either generation's story cancelling the other out. Set at this harder angle, the herald's own wish to speak freely runs straight into the old king's own insistence on restraint, a young quickness measured, checked and sometimes silenced by a caution the myth itself earned the hard way.
