What the tradition reads

Within a single chart Mercury square Pluto is read as a native so perceptive, and digging so deep for answers, that sources say they can become their own worst enemy: suspicion, paranoia and a habit of second-guessing others turn debate into a battleground the person did not necessarily need to enter, even while the same intensity, put to work in investigation, psychology or a creative field, becomes a genuine strength. Between two charts, this square is read as frequent battles of the mind: the Pluto person may push the Mercury person to see things their way, sources warning this can shade into abusive words and, over time, deteriorate the relationship if the underlying power struggle is never actually addressed.

The story

A square is ninety degrees, a quarter of the circle, one of the four configurations Ptolemy names; Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect calls the square a hard aspect that creates a strong and usable tension requiring adjustment or a decision, and Ptolemy calls it, together with the opposition, discordant. Hermes carries one office among the Greeks that suits this pairing exactly: psychopomp, the guide who leads the souls of the dead down to Hades's own kingdom, a role his Roman counterpart Mercury keeps as well, leading newly deceased souls to the afterlife. Set at this harder angle, the psychopomp's usual round trip starts to look one way only: the mind goes down into what is buried readily enough, but the tradition reads the return as the harder half of the journey, an account that does not always come back up clean.
