Mercury square Mercury

the transiting Mercury's periodic pass in square to its own natal place, or one person's Mercury square another's in synastry

What the tradition reads

A natal chart cannot show Mercury square itself, since no body can stand at an angle from its own degree; the tradition reads this key through transit instead, at the point in Mercury's own fast orbit where its transiting place squares its natal one. Cafe Astrology's own transit page names this pass a time when misunderstandings can arise, though it credits the same friction with stimulating the person into discovering a genuinely new perspective rather than simply causing confusion. Between two charts, one person's Mercury square another's is read as two minds that solve problems in very different ways, a difference sources name as a real source of friction between them, the two approaches needing patience and tolerance rather than a shared method to actually work side by side.

The story

A square is ninety degrees, a quarter of the circle, one of the four configurations Ptolemy names; Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect calls the square a hard aspect that creates a strong and usable tension requiring adjustment or a decision, and Ptolemy calls it, together with the opposition, discordant. Hermes meeting Hermes, or one chart's herald meeting another's, has no single myth of its own, since the god does not typically appear twice in the same story except as messenger to himself; the tradition instead reads the doubling as a mark of the god's own particular gift, recognition. Mercury is named a god of boundaries, commerce, communication, eloquence and travel, patron of the marketplace and the road where strangers meet as equals and come to understand each other's terms. Set at this harder angle, the herald meets a version of his own gift that keeps the terms of trade genuinely different, two fluent speakers of two different practical tongues, each certain their own is the plainer one.
