Mercury square Jupiter
Mercury square Jupiter, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart Mercury square Jupiter is read as a native who loves to express ideas, sharing them with others quite readily; the difficulty the tradition names is jumping to conclusions, Mercury's common nature taking on Jupiter's own scale faster than it can also take on Jupiter's caution, so that generosity of thought outruns the checking that would keep it accurate. Between two charts, this square is read as the harder register of a Mercury-Jupiter bond: problems following through on plans that were too grand to begin with, or promising more than can actually be delivered, along with frequent interruptions and open competition for who gets to speak. Perceptions diverge in a specific way, sources note, the Jupiter person coming across as haughty and the Mercury person finding Jupiter's own views simply impractical.
The story
A square is ninety degrees, a quarter of the circle, one of the four configurations Ptolemy names; Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect calls the square a hard aspect that creates a strong and usable tension requiring adjustment or a decision, and Ptolemy calls it, together with the opposition, discordant. Mercury's own parentage settles the connection outright: he is, in the standard genealogy, the son of Jupiter and Maia, daughter of the Titan Atlas. Mercury is himself named a god of boundaries, commerce, communication, eloquence and travel; Jupiter, the father whose household he was born into, ruled the gods as their king. Set at this harder angle, the son's own quick eloquence starts to outrun the father's own careful proof, Jupiter's scale tempting Mercury's quickness into promising more, or concluding faster, than the facts alone would support.
