Mercury opposite Venus
Mercury opposite Venus between two charts in synastry (the two cannot stand at this angle within a single nativity)
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart Mercury cannot actually stand opposite Venus: an opposition's full hundred and eighty degrees is far beyond the combined ceiling Ptolemy's own stated limits allow the pair, one sign for Mercury and two for Venus, and modern measurements of each planet's real elongation from the Sun, eighteen to twenty-eight degrees for Mercury and forty-five to forty-seven for Venus, make the gap wider still. The tradition reads this key only between two separate charts, where the two bodies are no longer both anchored to the same Sun. Between two charts, this opposition is read among the pairing's harder contacts: the exciting exchange of ideas can become a source of conflict, sources say, both partners competing a little and cutting each other off, one side reading as shallow or unnecessarily factual and the other as vain or illogical, the same friction the tradition names for the square.
The story
An opposition is a hundred and eighty degrees, half the circle, the two bodies facing each other directly across it; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs groups it with the square as discordant, and Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect describes oppositions as prone to exaggeration, their dichotomous quality keeping whatever they touch in a real and often tense relation rather than letting it settle. Hermes and Aphrodite are, in Ovid's telling, the parents of Hermaphroditus, a beautiful youth whose body a nymph's own prayer fused permanently with hers after she attacked him in her pool, so that the two, once separate, became a single 'creature of both sexes.' It is a story about two distinct natures pressed into one form, and the sky keeps its own quieter version of the same fact: Mercury and Venus, each bound to a close orbit around the Sun, are never actually found very far apart. Even facing each other in name only, the sky itself will not actually hold Mercury and Venus this far apart within one nativity; the myth's own fused, two-sexed body and the sky's own tight leash on this pair arrive, from opposite directions, at the same plain fact, that Hermes and Aphrodite's child was never truly going to be found very far from either parent.
