Mercury opposite Uranus

Mercury opposite Uranus, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Within a single chart Mercury opposite Uranus is read the same way as the square: a quick mind, very intuitive, requiring a great deal of mental stimulation to keep from feeling bored. Facing each other directly, the opposition is read as placing the wish for a stable line of thought and the wish to overturn it at two genuinely different poles, each active only while the other, for now, yields. Between two charts, this opposition belongs among the pairing's harder contacts: a partner stimulating and intriguing but also able to throw the other off course with surprises, sources noting potential incompatibility in perspectives, a difficulty depending on each other, and communication that is often stressful as a result.

The story

An opposition is a hundred and eighty degrees, half the circle, the two bodies facing each other directly across it; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs groups it with the square as discordant, and Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect describes oppositions as prone to exaggeration, their dichotomous quality keeping whatever they touch in a real and often tense relation rather than letting it settle. Hermes is credited with inventing the lyre, built from a tortoise shell on a sudden, unasked for inspiration rather than through any careful plan; named for the primordial sky Ouranos, born of Gaia herself before their union produced the Titans, the Cyclopes and the Hundred Handed Ones, one generation of new beings after another, Uranus carries into this pairing an old and prolific kind of invention the tradition keeps. Facing each other directly, the wish to communicate what is already known and the wish to overturn it hold opposite ends of the same mind, each fully in command only while the other, for the moment, gives way.
