Mercury opposite Saturn
Mercury opposite Saturn, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart Mercury opposite Saturn is read through the same censoring effect the tradition names for every hard Saturn contact with a personal planet: self-censorship in communication and difficulty expressing emotion freely. Facing each other directly, the opposition is read as setting the wish to speak plainly and the wish to weigh every word first at two genuinely different poles within the same mind. Between two charts, this opposition carries the same strong elements of teaching, learning and mutual intellectual respect the tradition names for the square, with the same risk of competitiveness: the Mercury person can feel not bright enough beside the Saturn person, and negativity or criticism can come to dominate the exchange, the opposition's own distance making the swing between respect and criticism more visible than in the square.
The story
An opposition is a hundred and eighty degrees, half the circle, the two bodies facing each other directly across it; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs groups it with the square as discordant, and Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect describes oppositions as prone to exaggeration, their dichotomous quality keeping whatever they touch in a real and often tense relation rather than letting it settle. Mercury's own father, Jupiter, succeeded his father, Saturn, as king of the gods, a succession the Romans kept free of violence, Saturn rewarded afterward with his own temple and a continuing cult rather than exile; Mercury, born into the household that replaced Saturn's own reign, carries a share of that history simply by being Jupiter's son, without either generation's story cancelling the other out. Facing each other directly, the wish to speak and the wish to weigh every word first hold opposite ends of the same exchange, each fully in charge only while the other, for the moment, stands back.
