Mercury opposite Jupiter

Mercury opposite Jupiter, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Within a single chart Mercury opposite Jupiter is read the same way as the square: a native who loves sharing ideas readily but jumps to conclusions faster than the facts warrant, Mercury's own common nature taking on Jupiter's scale without also taking on its caution. Facing each other directly, the opposition is read as setting the impulse to speak and the discipline to check what is being said at two genuinely different poles within the same mind. Between two charts, this opposition belongs to the pairing's harder contacts: trouble following through on plans too grand to begin with, frequent interruption, open competition for the floor, and a divergence in perception where the Jupiter person seems haughty and the Mercury person finds Jupiter's views impractical, the same problems the tradition names for the square, here made more visible by the opposition's own distance.

The story

An opposition is a hundred and eighty degrees, half the circle, the two bodies facing each other directly across it; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs groups it with the square as discordant, and Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect describes oppositions as prone to exaggeration, their dichotomous quality keeping whatever they touch in a real and often tense relation rather than letting it settle. Mercury's own parentage settles the connection outright: he is, in the standard genealogy, the son of Jupiter and Maia, daughter of the Titan Atlas. Mercury is himself named a god of boundaries, commerce, communication, eloquence and travel; Jupiter, the father whose household he was born into, ruled the gods as their king. Facing each other directly, the son's own careful account and the father's own confident scale pull toward opposite ends of the same message, each needing the other's correction to arrive at something both true and worth hearing.
