Mercury conjunct Neptune

Mercury conjunct Neptune, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Within a single chart Mercury conjunct Neptune is read as highly intuitive and creative: Cafe Astrology names intuition and creativity as the clearest mark of the contact, thinking that reaches naturally for metaphor, symbol and suggestion rather than plain, literal statement. The tradition credits this fusion with unusual imaginative gifts, a mind that absorbs an atmosphere or a feeling before it can articulate a fact, though the same sources warn the combination can also make plain concentration harder to sustain. Between two charts, one person's Mercury conjunct another's Neptune is read as combining elements of both the pairing's easier and harder registers: conversations take on a poetic, fanciful quality, Neptune inspiring Mercury's own creative side, though practical communication can suffer for it, and sources warn both partners to guard against exaggeration or outright deception, since Mercury can struggle to get a clear answer out of Neptune.

The story

A conjunction sets two bodies at, or close to, the same degree, with no real angular distance between them; Ptolemy's own chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs measures the opposition, trine, square and sextile by the number of degrees separating two positions, yet Wikipedia's summary counts the conjunction among the five traditional major aspects sometimes called Ptolemaic, and reports that conjunctions are said to be the most powerful aspects, because they mutually intensify the effects of the involved planets. Hermes is the god of clever speech, and Poseidon, whose Roman translation gives Neptune its myth, is the god of a domain that resists being spoken of plainly at all, its currents, depths and moods too large for any single description to hold. Fused together, the herald's usual gift for the exact word is asked to describe the sea instead, and finds, as every poet who has tried the same task discovers, that the sea does not fully cooperate: language bends, blurs and turns figurative in the attempt, which the tradition reads not as Mercury's failure but as Neptune's particular and considerable gift to it.
