Mars trine Uranus
Mars trine Uranus, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart Mars trine Uranus is read, like the sextile, as naturally inventive, bold, impulsive and courageous. The tradition names the trine the more dynamic of the two harmonious Mars-Uranus contacts, originality and daring expressed naturally and consistently, a native who stands out from a crowd without any particular effort spent trying to. Between two charts, this trine is read among the pairing's easier contacts, the same comfortable excitement, novelty and intrigue the tradition names for the sextile.
The story
A trine is a hundred and twenty degrees, a third of the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs calls it, together with the sextile, harmonious, since the signs it joins are of the same kind, all masculine or all feminine, and Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect calls the trine extremely beneficial, indicating harmony, ease and what is natural, one of the two aspects the tradition sets against the square and opposition's discord. Ares plays no part in the story, but the first violence the Greeks told of the sky is already the terms Mars would later claim as his own: Cronus, at Gaia's own urging, took a weapon to his father Uranus and cut him down, a single forceful stroke that ended Uranus's reign outright and let a new order begin. Set at this most flowing angle, force and sudden change need no effort to cooperate, action finding the new opening the moment it appears rather than after the fact.
