Mars trine Pluto

Mars trine Pluto, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Within a single chart Mars trine Pluto is read, like the sextile, as adding a layer of intensity, strategy and resourcefulness to the personality. The tradition names the trine the more dynamic of the two harmonious Mars-Pluto contacts, this same commitment and passion expressed naturally and consistently. Between two charts, Mars-Pluto interaspects are read as stimulating, sources say, more intensely so than most contacts, the battles-of-wills warning reserved for the pairing's difficult aspects rather than for an easy one like this.

The story

A trine is a hundred and twenty degrees, a third of the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs calls it, together with the sextile, harmonious, since the signs it joins are of the same kind, all masculine or all feminine, and Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect calls the trine extremely beneficial, indicating harmony, ease and what is natural, one of the two aspects the tradition sets against the square and opposition's discord. Mars is the god the Romans set over war, and Pluto is the god the Greeks set over what war, among other things, has always produced in quantity: the dead who cross into his kingdom and do not return. The two gods share no single myth between them, but they share a domain each keeps distinct, one causing what the other receives. Set at this most flowing angle, force and depth need no effort to work together, drive finding, without a fight, exactly the intensity and resourcefulness Pluto's own domain has to lend it.
