The story

A square is ninety degrees, a quarter of the circle, one of the four configurations Ptolemy names; Ptolemy's own chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs calls the opposition and quartile discordant, formed between signs of different natures and sexes, while Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect describes the square, in its own words, as creating a strong and usable tension, a turning point where an important decision needs to be made that involves an opportunity at a cost. Ares plays no part in the story, but the first violence the Greeks told of the sky is already the terms Mars would later claim as his own: Cronus, at Gaia's own urging, took a weapon to his father Uranus and cut him down, a single forceful stroke that ended Uranus's reign outright and let a new order begin. Set at this harder angle, force and sudden rupture pull against each other rather than together: the wish to act on a plan meets a demand to abandon the plan entirely, and neither will simply give way.
