Mars sextile Jupiter
Mars sextile Jupiter, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart Mars sextile Jupiter is read, together with the trine, as one of the pairing's easy contacts: Cafe Astrology's natal reading says the aspect "adds energy, sincerity, frankness, a sense of adventure, and a love of life to the personality," with good timing and organizational ability keeping the drive useful rather than reckless. The tradition names fair mindedness and a preference for honesty and directness as part of the same easy cooperation between force and confidence. Between two charts, one person's Mars sextile another's Jupiter is read, together with the trine, as a bond that "brings out the enthusiasm, wonder, desire to learn" in each other, with "mutual respect" at its foundation and both partners feeling fortunate in each other's company, encouraged toward meaningful action and broader experience.
The story
A sextile sets two bodies at the hexagonal distance from each other, two signs or sixty degrees apart; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs names it, together with the trine, harmonious, since the two signs it joins share the same gender. Mars is named, on the Roman tradition's own terms, Jupiter's son, born in the more usual account of Jupiter and Juno together; Wikipedia's page for Jupiter lists Mars among his children without recording any conflict between them. At this cooperative angle, sovereignty and force are read as working together willingly, the father's reach given a son able and glad to carry it forward.
