The story

An opposition is a hundred and eighty degrees, half the circle, the two bodies facing each other directly across it; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs groups it with the square as discordant, and Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect describes oppositions as prone to exaggeration, their dichotomous quality keeping whatever they touch in a real and often tense relation rather than letting it settle. Ares plays no part in the story, but the first violence the Greeks told of the sky is already the terms Mars would later claim as his own: Cronus, at Gaia's own urging, took a weapon to his father Uranus and cut him down, a single forceful stroke that ended Uranus's reign outright and let a new order begin. Facing each other directly, the planned campaign and the sudden stroke hold two ends of the same event, each fully in command only while the other, for the moment, is held off.
