What the tradition reads

Within a single chart Mars opposition Jupiter is read, together with the square, as impulsiveness and insatiable desire set against each other from across the circle: Cafe Astrology's natal reading describes a daring nature that takes on challenges readily but struggles with satisfaction, warning that "when you don't learn from your mistakes, you repeat them." The tradition's usual counsel is to slow down and reflect, since the source notes a person in hard aspect here "would benefit from slowing down and reflecting on their experiences so that they avoid living life feeling they have never had enough," a haste that can otherwise read as haughty or leave a person accident prone. Between two charts, one person's Mars opposition another's Jupiter is read, together with the square, as "spirited, animated, and exciting" at first, though over time "resentment can build" as the Jupiter person comes to see the Mars person as lacking principle and the Mars person sees the Jupiter person as overly theoretical, activity crowding out the couple's emotional intimacy if the two are not careful.

The story

An opposition sets two bodies at the diametrical distance from each other, six signs or one hundred eighty degrees apart; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs names it, together with the square, discordant, since it joins signs of a differing nature and gender. Mars is named, on the Roman tradition's own terms, Jupiter's son, born in the more usual account of Jupiter and Juno together; Wikipedia's page for Jupiter lists Mars among his children without describing any quarrel between the two. Set at the chart's widest distance rather than fused, sovereignty and force are read as pulling toward opposite ends of the same line, the father's reach and the son's readiness to act now facing each other rather than moving as one.
