What the tradition reads

Within a single chart Mars conjunct Uranus is read as a rather provocative and often dogmatic personality, Cafe Astrology says, a native who makes their own rules and does not much like taking orders from anyone else. Between two charts, one person's Mars conjunct another's Uranus is read as an aspect where sparks can fly: exciting but also quite explosive and unpredictable, sources say, energizing both partners though impatience can become a problem, sexual responsiveness strong even as tenderness sometimes lacks, and the Uranus person's own detachment eventually frustrating the Mars person's passion.

The story

A conjunction sets two bodies at, or close to, the same degree, with no real angular distance between them; Ptolemy's own chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs measures the opposition, trine, square and sextile by the number of degrees separating two positions, yet Wikipedia's summary counts the conjunction among the five traditional major aspects sometimes called Ptolemaic, and reports that conjunctions are said to be the most powerful aspects, because they mutually intensify the effects of the involved planets. Ares plays no part in the story, but the first violence the Greeks told of the sky is already the terms Mars would later claim as his own: Cronus, at Gaia's own urging, took a weapon to his father Uranus and cut him down, a single forceful stroke that ended Uranus's reign outright and let a new order begin. Fused together, force is given Uranus's own suddenness: not a campaign planned in advance but a single stroke, decisive and total, ending one state of affairs and starting the next in the same instant.
