Mars conjunct Saturn
Mars conjunct Saturn, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart Mars conjunct Saturn is read as a determined, gritty and realistic combination, Cafe Astrology says, Ptolemy's own malefic judgement of Saturn read here as force given real structure rather than simply slowed down. Between two charts, one person's Mars conjunct another's Saturn is best understood, sources say, by considering the two planets' own separate energies: Mars naturally expresses the sign's energy while Saturn feels inhibited expressing it, and if both partners are growth oriented they can learn from each other, Mars gaining thoughtfulness and Saturn gaining spontaneity, though if Mars turns insensitive or Saturn tries to control Mars outright the dynamic deteriorates into resentment.
The story
A conjunction sets two bodies at, or close to, the same degree, with no real angular distance between them; Ptolemy's own chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs measures the opposition, trine, square and sextile by the number of degrees separating two positions, yet Wikipedia's summary counts the conjunction among the five traditional major aspects sometimes called Ptolemaic, and reports that conjunctions are said to be the most powerful aspects, because they mutually intensify the effects of the involved planets. Cronus and Ares meet here as two kinds of hard force set against each other, the old king's calculating self-preservation against the young war god's blunt, immediate action; it was Gaia, not Cronus, who fashioned the sickle and urged her children to move against Uranus, Cronus only the one son among them willing to lie in ambush when the moment came, while Wikipedia's own page on Mars says his Greek counterpart Ares was often treated with contempt and revulsion in Greek literature, viewed primarily as a destructive and destabilizing force next to Mars's own function of securing peace. Fused together, the old king's caution and the young god's charge share a single register: force that has already been given a structure to work inside, gritty and realistic rather than reckless.
