Jupiter trine Neptune

Jupiter trine Neptune, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

With Jupiter trine Neptune in the birth chart, the tradition reads an intuitive or spiritual approach to solving problems and a compassionate, tolerant view of the world, someone who believes in their own dreams and in humanity more than most and who looks out for the vulnerable. Sources describe the trine as the more dynamic of the two harmonious Jupiter-Neptune contacts, this same generosity of spirit arriving as a steady undertone rather than something the sextile's native has to actively call upon, often paired with a natural love of music, art, religion and ceremony. Between two charts, one person's Jupiter trine another's Neptune is read as a spiritual or near-psychic link between the two, each activating the other's compassionate and generous side. Sources call it a good aspect for money matters provided other, more practical contacts are also present, and warn that the same ease can just as easily encourage an indulgent or lazy side in both partners.

The story

A trine is a hundred and twenty degrees, a third of the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs calls it, together with the sextile, harmonious, since the signs it joins are of the same kind, all masculine or all feminine, and Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect calls the trine extremely beneficial, indicating harmony, ease and what is natural. Jupiter's own page names him brother to Neptune and Pluto in the Greek-influenced tradition, the three of them presiding respectively over the sky, the waters and the underworld, one realm of the universe apiece; Neptune's own page confirms the same three-way brotherhood in its own words, naming him ruler of the seas alongside Jupiter's heaven and Pluto's underworld. Jupiter kept the sky and its thunder for his own, thunderbolt and eagle his standing emblems and king of the gods his title; Neptune, god of freshwater and the sea, took the waters, Salacia his consort and the trident among his own emblems. Set at this most flowing angle, sky and sea share their old border without any friction at all, Jupiter's heaven and Neptune's waters meeting exactly where the ancient division always meant them to.
