Jupiter square Saturn

Jupiter square Saturn, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Within a single chart Jupiter square Saturn is read as a native for whom "it's natural to swing between faith and doubt, or optimism and pessimism," a well developed moral compass paired with real difficulty enjoying anything without also weighing "what you should be doing" instead. The tradition names a reluctance to take on complicated, ambitious goals, a preference for the quick fix over the harder, longer path, alongside firm values and real caution in unfamiliar situations, the whole reading less like indecision than like two honest convictions that have never quite reached a settlement. Between two charts, one person's Jupiter square another's Saturn is read as friction between exploration and caution: the Jupiter person can feel "restricted, overseen, or limited" by the Saturn person, while Saturn in turn reads Jupiter as "foolhardy or overly positive," Jupiter's taste for new horizons set directly against Saturn's preference for the familiar and tried and true. Sources note that growth is possible once both sides are willing to compromise.

The story

A square is ninety degrees, a quarter of the circle, one of the four configurations Ptolemy names, and one of the two he calls discordant. Jupiter usurped his own father Saturn to become king of the gods. Saturn's own page tells this without any war: it says only that he arrived in Italy "dethroned and fugitive" after his son took power, and that there he brought agriculture and civilization, for which Janus rewarded him with a share of the kingdom. The reign the two of them kept together afterward is remembered, in Virgil's account that the page quotes, as a golden age, "in such perfect peace he ruled the nations." Set at this harder angle, the son's confident new order and the father's older, harder won sense of what actually lasts pull against each other rather than combining, the same inheritance that elsewhere cooperates here turning into friction.
