Jupiter square Neptune

Jupiter square Neptune, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

With Jupiter square Neptune in the birth chart, the tradition names the same fundamental charity and belief in humanity read for the opposition, a person who wants to trust others and finds it hard to practise the skepticism that might sometimes be warranted. Sources describe a runaway imagination that needs frequent reality checks, a tendency to procrastinate or let opportunities pass, and, at its most difficult, a habit of making up convenient morals to excuse overlooking inconvenient rules. Between two charts, one person's Jupiter square another's Neptune is read as a relationship where differences in ethical or religious belief come into the spotlight, sources naming feelings of mistrust or uncertainty and a temptation, more often on the Neptune person's side, to lie or evade rather than confront a difficult truth. The strain is described as more consequential in business relationships than personal ones, though workable with effort from both partners.

The story

A square is ninety degrees, a quarter of the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs groups it with the opposition as discordant, made between signs of differing nature and sex, and Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect calls the square a hard aspect that creates a strong and usable tension, asking for adjustment or a decision. Jupiter's own page names him brother to Neptune and Pluto in the Greek-influenced tradition, the three of them presiding respectively over the sky, the waters and the underworld, one realm of the universe apiece; Neptune's own page confirms the same three-way brotherhood in its own words, naming him ruler of the seas alongside Jupiter's heaven and Pluto's underworld. Jupiter kept the sky and its thunder for his own, thunderbolt and eagle his standing emblems and king of the gods his title; Neptune, god of freshwater and the sea, took the waters, Salacia his consort and the trident among his own emblems. Set at this harder angle, sky and sea pull against the very border the old division of realms drew between them, Jupiter's own expansiveness straining at the edge of Neptune's dissolving waters.
