Jupiter sextile Neptune

Jupiter sextile Neptune, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

With Jupiter sextile Neptune in the birth chart, the tradition names a gracious and compassionate nature, alert to subtlety, intuitive, and inclined to believe in karma without holding rigid ideas of right and wrong. Sources read the aspect as one indication of protection, sometimes arriving at the last minute, and connect it with good fortune in the psychic arts, psychology, social work, education, travel and the sea, though money management is still named as an area where outside help may be needed. Between two charts, one person's Jupiter sextile another's Neptune is read as a basic understanding and a spirit of forgiveness between the two, sources calling it a wonderfully supportive contact that subtly builds goodwill; the relationship page groups the sextile with the trine as a more natural flow that supports each partner's personal philosophy, ideals and growth.

The story

A sextile is sixty degrees, a sixth of the circle; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs names it, together with the trine, harmonious, since it joins signs of matching gender, and Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect calls the sextile similar to the trine but less intense, offering opportunity rather than simply handing it over. Jupiter's own page names him brother to Neptune and Pluto in the Greek-influenced tradition, the three of them presiding respectively over the sky, the waters and the underworld, one realm of the universe apiece; Neptune's own page confirms the same three-way brotherhood in its own words, naming him ruler of the seas alongside Jupiter's heaven and Pluto's underworld. Jupiter kept the sky and its thunder for his own, thunderbolt and eagle his standing emblems and king of the gods his title; Neptune, god of freshwater and the sea, took the waters, Salacia his consort and the trident among his own emblems. Set at this easier angle, sky and sea meet as the two brothers' own realms border one another, Jupiter's thunder and Neptune's tides cooperating across the boundary the old division drew between them.
