Jupiter opposite Saturn
Jupiter opposite Saturn, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry
What the tradition reads
Within a single chart Jupiter opposite Saturn is read as an intensified version of the square's see-sawing, pulled between "hope, optimism, and faith versus doubt and oppression by limitations." The tradition names a tendency toward impatience and restlessness under this contact, the native needing to work at overcoming both before the dreams Jupiter reaches for and the caution Saturn insists on can be brought into any kind of working order together. Between two charts, one person's Jupiter opposite another's Saturn is read, with the square, as a hard contact, in which, Cafe Astrology writes, "finding a balance between optimism and caution is tricky in this relationship," the two people cast into polarised roles, one optimistic and risk taking, the other moderate and conservative. Sources suggest the compromise the pair needs starts with recognising that their core values likely sit closer together than their opposite approaches would suggest.
The story
An opposition is a hundred and eighty degrees, the full diameter of the circle, standing two bodies at the greatest possible distance; Ptolemy counted it among his four configurations. Jupiter usurped his own father Saturn to become king of the gods. Saturn's own page tells this without any war: it says only that he arrived in Italy "dethroned and fugitive" after his son took power, and that there he brought agriculture and civilization, for which Janus rewarded him with a share of the kingdom. The reign the two of them kept together afterward is remembered, in Virgil's account that the page quotes, as a golden age, "in such perfect peace he ruled the nations." Standing at the full distance of the wheel from each other, the two read as the two ends of that same story, the son's confident new order and the father's older, quieter second kingdom, each fully visible only from the vantage point of the other.
