Jupiter opposite Neptune

Jupiter opposite Neptune, within one nativity or between two charts in synastry

What the tradition reads

Cafe Astrology reads Jupiter opposite Neptune together with the square, as a fundamentally charitable and sympathetic placement, someone who believes in humanity even when that belief costs them, prone to wasted opportunities and needing frequent reality checks against a runaway imagination. Astrology King gives the opposition its own separate reading, naming a curious intellect that questions the truth or reality that most people simply accept, a minority view of the world that can bring both some isolation growing up and, later, real creative or scholarly brilliance, so long as self-confidence is strong enough to absorb the disappointment such questioning invites. Between two charts, Jupiter opposite Neptune is read together with the square and quincunx as a test of differing ethical or religious beliefs, the Jupiter person prone to mistrust or uncertainty toward the Neptune person, and, more often with the opposition specifically, a tendency for one partner to be cast as the dreamy or unreliable one through projection. Sources hold that the relationship works best when each partner is given the freedom to believe, aspire and explore in their own way.

The story

An opposition is a hundred and eighty degrees, half the circle, the two bodies set at the greatest possible distance from each other; Ptolemy's chapter on the mutual configuration of the signs groups it with the square as discordant, and Wikipedia's own summary of the aspect adds that oppositions run to exaggeration, their dichotomous quality keeping whatever they touch in a real and often tense relation. Jupiter's own page names him brother to Neptune and Pluto in the Greek-influenced tradition, the three of them presiding respectively over the sky, the waters and the underworld, one realm of the universe apiece; Neptune's own page confirms the same three-way brotherhood in its own words, naming him ruler of the seas alongside Jupiter's heaven and Pluto's underworld. Jupiter kept the sky and its thunder for his own, thunderbolt and eagle his standing emblems and king of the gods his title; Neptune, god of freshwater and the sea, took the waters, Salacia his consort and the trident among his own emblems. Set at the furthest possible remove, sky and sea face each other exactly as the old division of the world set them, Jupiter's heaven and Neptune's waters holding their ancient border rather than crossing it.
