The Cancer Ascendant
general summary for a Cancer Ascendant (rising sign)
What the tradition reads
A Cancer Ascendant is read as a gentleness that keeps something back. Cancer is ruled by the Moon, and the tradition, following Alan Leo's delineations for the rising sign, describes those with Cancer rising as quiet, reserved and quick tempered in short bursts rather than lasting rage, gifted with a fertile imagination that can tip into vanity or borrowed drama when it is not given honest outlets. The manner is unassuming and often protective, a first impression that gives away little until trust has been earned, paired with a sensitivity to mood, in a room or in another person, that registers before the Cancer rising person has said anything at all. The tradition reads this Ascendant as seeking security above display, a wariness of ridicule that makes the sign conventional in company even when its private imagination runs far from convention. As with any rising sign, the trait is least examined early in the sign and most consciously carried late in it. The shadow is a defensiveness that reads as moodiness to people who have not earned the trust yet; its ease is a loyalty and attentiveness that, once given, rarely needs to be asked for twice.
The story
The Ascendant's technical role, the seat of physical bearing and first impression rather than of underlying character, dates to Hellenistic astrology's practice of fixing a horoscope to a precise hour, when the ecliptic's crossing of the eastern horizon became the first house's cusp in a way the Sun's sign, tied only to the month, could not provide. Cancer, the sign that can stand at this door, carries the myth of the Karkinos, a crab sent by Hera to distract Heracles during his battle with the many headed Hydra in the marsh of Lerna; the crab pinched at his feet and was crushed underfoot for its trouble, after which Hera, grateful even for its small resistance to her enemy, placed its remains among the stars as Cancer. Roman tellings give the same act to Juno. Older civilisations read the same stars through their own small, armoured creatures before the Greeks fixed the crab there, the Egyptians seeing a scarab and Mesopotamian astronomers a turtle. A rising sign built on a creature that endures by retreat rather than victory gives the tradition its picture of Cancer's own guarded, protective first impression.
