The Saturn antardasha

the Saturn antardasha, a sub-period of Saturn falling within any mahadasha of the Vimshottari sequence

What the tradition reads

Every mahadasha in the Vimshottari sequence divides into nine antardashas, one for each graha, each lasting a length proportional to that planet's own share of the hundred and twenty year cycle, so the Saturn antardasha, drawn from Saturn's own nineteen years, runs longer inside most mahadashas than any antardasha except one ruled by Venus. Phaladeepika's rule for the sub-periods states that a planet's dasha effects recur again in its bhukti and antara, so a Saturn antardasha is read through the same lens as a Saturn mahadasha at smaller scale, disorders of the wind attributed to disturbed constitution among a person's family, loss in agriculture, association with the wicked, desertion by servants and sudden loss of relations or property where Saturn stands poorly, and slow, durable gains built through patience and endurance where it stands well. Because a Saturn antardasha already runs close to the longest length any sub-period can reach, the tradition reads it as one of the heavier interruptions a mahadasha can carry, capable of imposing a real season of restriction, delay or hard labour on whatever the ruling planet's own period is otherwise doing, its lessons arriving through what is withheld rather than through what is given.

The story

Shani's glance was made fearsome by his own wife's curse after he neglected her for prolonged devotion to Krishna, a penalty for absorption in one thing at the cost of another, and he is remembered nonetheless as a scrupulously fair judge, the deity of karma and time who rewards discipline as surely as he punishes its absence. A sub-period that enters someone else's mahadasha demanding attention and discipline before it will move on suits this figure exactly: the Saturn antardasha is read as the moment within a longer period when the tradition's strictest teacher insists on being properly reckoned with, imposing delay or restriction if the ruling mahadasha's own business has been conducted carelessly, and rewarding patience if it has not, the same even handed justice Shani's myth gives him applied now to a shorter stretch inside another planet's larger story.
