The Mercury antardasha
a Mercury sub-period running inside a larger Vimshottari mahadasha
What the tradition reads
An antardasha is a sub-period running inside a larger mahadasha, its length a fixed proportion of the ruling lord's own years out of the hundred and twenty the Vimshottari cycle allots in total, and the tradition reads its character as a blend: the sub-period's planet colours the years, while the mahadasha's own planet still sets the wider stage. A Mercury antardasha is read as bringing the meeting of friends, personal comforts, fame through the good opinion of the learned, and favour from elders, according to Phaladeepika, and modern jyotish generally extends this to the years in which a person's work is done chiefly through the mind and the word, writing, trade, analysis, negotiation and speech. Mercury is treated as adaptable rather than forceful, and a period it colours is read as effective through cleverness and communication rather than through direct assertion. Because Mercury's own nature bends toward whichever planet it is placed with or aspected by, the classical texts caution that the sub-period's actual flavour depends heavily on Mercury's condition in the birth chart, benefic when well disposed and considerably more anxious and scattered when afflicted or combust.
The story
Budha, Mercury's Sanskrit name, is told in the Puranas as the son of Chandra, the Moon, and, in the account Wikipedia gives, either Rohini or Tara, the version naming Tara as his mother tied to the story of the Tarakamaya War. Whichever telling a source keeps, the planet's reputation as the trader, scribe and messenger among the nine grahas stands apart from the dispute over his birth, the one among the classical bodies whose business is the carrying of words and numbers rather than the wielding of force. Because the planet Mercury never strays far from the Sun in the visible sky, the tradition reads it as a body whose strength is borrowed and situational rather than fixed on its own account, and gives an antardasha it rules the same character, capable, quick and communicative, but shaped as much by what stands beside it as by anything Mercury brings alone.
